Nintendo is finally preparing to show more of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Nintendo Switch 2 as the iconic franchise celebrates its 40th anniversary. The company has scheduled a dedicated Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct for September 8, 2026, with the presentation expected to provide important new information about the Switch 2 version of the Nintendo 64 classic.

Nintendo’s Japanese announcement specifically confirmed that the presentation will include details about The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Nintendo Switch 2, alongside anniversary initiatives outside of games. The broadcast is scheduled to run for approximately 30 minutes.

For fans, the timing is particularly important because Nintendo has so far revealed very little about the remake beyond a short teaser and a 2026 release window. The September Direct therefore represents the first major opportunity for Nintendo to demonstrate what it has done with one of the most influential games in Zelda history.

Ocarina of Time Is Coming Exclusively to Switch 2

Nintendo first officially revealed the new version during its June 2026 Nintendo Direct. The company described Ocarina of Time as the return of the critically acclaimed Nintendo 64 classic for a new generation, with the game being rebuilt for Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo confirmed that it will launch during 2026.

That announcement immediately made the game one of the most anticipated releases in the Switch 2 lineup. The original Ocarina of Time is widely regarded as one of the most important games in Nintendo history, particularly for establishing the template for 3D Zelda adventures.

The Switch 2 version gives Nintendo an opportunity to modernise the experience for current hardware while preserving the original game’s world, characters and adventure.

However, Nintendo has deliberately kept most details under wraps. Until now, players have not received a full gameplay demonstration, a detailed explanation of the technical upgrades or a firm worldwide release date.

That is why the 40th Anniversary Direct is so significant.

What Nintendo Could Reveal About the Remake

The most important expected information is the game’s release date. Nintendo has only confirmed a 2026 window so far, leaving fans waiting for a specific launch day.

A closer look at gameplay is also expected to be a major part of the presentation. Nintendo’s original teaser gave only a limited glimpse of the new version, so the Direct could reveal how Hyrule, Link, enemies, dungeons and major story sequences have been redesigned for Switch 2.

The remake’s visual direction will be especially important. Rather than simply increasing the resolution of the Nintendo 64 version, fans are expecting a modern presentation that takes advantage of Switch 2 hardware.

Nintendo could also reveal technical improvements such as higher-resolution graphics, improved lighting, upgraded character models, enhanced environments and faster loading.

One of the biggest questions is how extensively Nintendo has changed the original game. The company has officially called it The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, rather than describing it merely as a Switch 2 Edition of the original Nintendo 64 game. That has fuelled expectations that this could be a substantial remake rather than a straightforward port.

Pricing Details Have Already Started Appearing

Interestingly, information about the game’s potential price appeared online shortly before the Direct.

A listing on Nintendo’s Australian store briefly showed a digital price of AU$94.95, while the physical equivalent was expected to be around AU$109.95. That pricing corresponds roughly to a US$59.99 digital price and US$69.99 physical price, although Nintendo’s regional pricing still needs to be officially confirmed.

The Australian listing was subsequently removed, meaning players should treat the US and European prices as expected rather than officially confirmed until Nintendo announces them.

If the pricing proves accurate, Nintendo would be positioning the remake alongside other major Switch 2 releases rather than treating it as a budget-priced retro remake.

Why This Direct Matters for Nintendo Switch 2

The announcement arrives at an important point for Nintendo. The Switch 2 is building its library of major first-party and third-party games, and a new version of one of Nintendo’s most famous Zelda titles could become a major system seller.

The original Ocarina of Time already has enormous recognition among longtime Nintendo fans. Bringing it back with modern visuals could also introduce the game to a younger generation that never experienced the Nintendo 64 original.

Nintendo is also using the 40th anniversary to expand Zelda beyond a single game. The company has confirmed that the Direct will include anniversary initiatives beyond gaming, suggesting that merchandise, entertainment projects and other celebrations could accompany the Ocarina of Time announcement.

The company is separately holding another Nintendo Direct on September 9, focused on upcoming Switch 2 and Switch games. Nintendo says that presentation will run for approximately 45 minutes.

That separation allows the Zelda presentation to concentrate specifically on the franchise and its anniversary.

For Zelda fans, however, the main attraction remains Ocarina of Time. After months of waiting, Nintendo is finally preparing to pull back the curtain on its Switch 2 remake. With the release still scheduled for 2026, the September 8 Direct could reveal the game’s release date, pricing, gameplay and the scale of the remake — potentially making it one of Nintendo’s biggest announcements of the year.
