The wait for Grand Theft Auto 6 on PC has taken another unexpected turn after software developer and former Roblox developer John Shedletsky predicted that modders could potentially get GTA 6 running on PC before Rockstar Games releases an official PC version.

The claim has quickly attracted attention because GTA 6 is currently scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, but Rockstar’s officially listed launch platforms are PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar’s official GTA 6 website does not currently list a PC version, while its support page specifically identifies PS5 and Xbox Series X|S as the platforms available for pre-order.
However, there is an important distinction: Shedletsky’s statement is a prediction, not confirmation that an unofficial PC version is currently being developed or that one will definitely work before Rockstar’s official port.
What the Modder Prediction Actually Means
The prediction comes from the idea that the PC gaming and modding community has become increasingly capable of reverse engineering games, building compatibility layers and using modern development tools.
Shedletsky, who joined Roblox in its early years and has substantial games-industry experience, believes modders could potentially achieve a playable PC implementation before Rockstar completes its own official PC release. But there is currently no publicly demonstrated GTA 6 PC port that establishes this as a real development project.
That difference is important.
Getting some portion of a game running is very different from creating a stable PC version. A successful unofficial project would need to deal with graphics rendering, memory management, input systems, CPU and GPU compatibility, storage requirements, game-engine dependencies and potentially extensive optimisation.
GTA 6 is also expected to be an enormous technical project, making a complete unofficial conversion considerably more complicated than simply getting a small portion of the game to display on a PC.
GTA 6 Officially Launches on Consoles First
Rockstar currently lists November 19, 2026 as GTA 6’s release date. The official platforms are PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Rockstar’s support documentation, updated in August 2026, also states that GTA 6 can be pre-ordered for those two platforms. The company has provided information about digital and physical versions, pre-loading and the game’s editions, but it has not announced an official PC release date.
That leaves PC players in a familiar position for a major Rockstar release: the console versions arrive first, while PC players wait for a later announcement.
Rockstar has followed a similar strategy with several major releases in the past. Grand Theft Auto V, for example, initially launched on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2013 before reaching PC in 2015. Red Dead Redemption 2 launched on consoles in October 2018 and arrived on PC in November 2019.
Those examples demonstrate Rockstar’s history of staggered releases, although they cannot be used to establish an exact GTA 6 PC date.
Could Emulation Be the Shortcut?
One possible route to running a console game on PC is emulation.
Instead of converting the game into a traditional native PC version, an emulator attempts to reproduce the environment of the original console so that the game’s software can execute on another platform.
There has already been progress in PS5 emulation research. Recent demonstrations have shown portions of older games running through experimental PlayStation 5 emulation projects, although stability and compatibility remain significant challenges. A recent demonstration involving GTA V, for example, showed the game running for a short period but also experiencing graphical problems and crashes.
That is an important distinction for GTA 6.
A demonstration proving that a game can launch does not mean an emulator can run a modern blockbuster smoothly at playable frame rates. GTA 6 would present a substantially larger challenge because of its expected world size, advanced rendering technology and demanding simulation systems.
AI Could Help Modders — But It Does Not Magically Create GTA 6 for PC
Another reason the prediction is receiving attention is the growing use of AI-assisted programming.
Modern AI coding tools can potentially help developers understand code, write utilities, debug problems and automate parts of complicated development workflows. That could accelerate certain aspects of reverse engineering and compatibility work.
But AI does not automatically provide the source code, proprietary assets or internal development tools required to turn a console game into a finished PC release.
In other words, AI could potentially make parts of the technical process faster, but it does not remove the fundamental engineering challenges.
Rockstar Is Tightening Its Position on Unofficial Ports
There is another major obstacle for anyone attempting an unofficial GTA 6 PC port: Rockstar’s current modding rules.
Rockstar’s official support documentation directs users to its policies and guidelines covering single-player and story-mode modifications.
More importantly, Rockstar has recently taken action against unofficial ports of its games. A reported GTA V Nintendo Switch project was shut down after intervention from Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company. The incident followed updated guidelines stating that Rockstar games should not be modified to operate on hardware or platforms where Rockstar has not officially released them.
That means even if technically skilled developers manage to get GTA 6 running on PC, technical feasibility and legal permission are two completely different questions.
An unofficial port could face takedown action before it ever becomes a widely distributed product.
GTA 6 PC Could Still Arrive Officially Later
The more conventional route for PC players remains waiting for Rockstar’s official version.
Rockstar has not announced a PC release date, so any specific prediction should be treated cautiously. A former Rockstar producer, John Ricchio, recently discussed the studio’s approach to PC development and explained that creating a PC version involves development resources and priorities rather than simply pressing a button to enable another platform.
That helps explain why Rockstar can launch a game on consoles first even when PC hardware is considerably more powerful.
PC development introduces additional combinations of hardware, drivers, operating systems and configurations that developers have to support. Optimising a massive open-world game for that environment can require significant additional work.
The Biggest Question Is Whether an Unofficial Version Could Actually Beat Rockstar
The fascinating part of Shedletsky’s prediction is not simply whether GTA 6 can technically run on a PC.
The bigger question is whether an unofficial project could become stable, playable and accessible enough to appear before Rockstar’s official PC edition.
Those are very different milestones.
A developer might manage to boot a game, display its opening sequence or run a limited section while still being years away from producing a complete playable experience. Rockstar’s own PC port would also have access to the company’s development resources, source code, proprietary tools and ability to optimise the game specifically for PC hardware.
Therefore, a theoretical unofficial breakthrough should not be confused with a complete PC release.
What GTA 6 PC Players Should Expect
For now, the confirmed situation is straightforward: GTA 6 launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026, while Rockstar has not announced an official PC release date.
The unofficial-port prediction is an interesting possibility, particularly given the increasing capabilities of game modders, reverse engineers and AI-assisted development. But there is currently no confirmed working GTA 6 PC port that would allow PC players to bypass the official launch.
The recent shutdown of an unofficial GTA V Switch project also demonstrates the risks involved for developers attempting to bring Rockstar games to unsupported platforms.
For GTA 6 fans, the story therefore remains one of possibility rather than confirmation. If modders eventually manage to demonstrate GTA 6 running on PC before Rockstar announces its own PC version, it would represent a remarkable technical achievement. But until such evidence appears, the November 2026 console launch remains the only officially confirmed release, and an early unofficial PC version should be treated as speculation rather than an expected release.
