Marvel’s Wolverine is finally approaching its September 2026 launch, with Insomniac Games preparing to bring its darker take on Logan to PlayStation 5. Developed by the studio behind the Marvel’s Spider-Man series in collaboration with Marvel Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment, the game is a single-player, narrative-driven action-adventure built specifically for current-generation PlayStation hardware.

Marvel's Wolverine

The game has attracted major attention since its announcement because it represents Insomniac’s first major standalone game centred on Wolverine. Unlike the Spider-Man titles, however, Marvel’s Wolverine is not an open-world game. Instead, it focuses on a tightly directed story, cinematic set pieces, brutal combat and exploration across several locations around the world.

Release Date and Platforms

Marvel’s Wolverine will officially launch on September 15, 2026.

The game is being released exclusively for PlayStation 5, including the PS5 Pro. It is not coming to PlayStation 4, and Sony has not announced versions for Xbox, Nintendo Switch 2 or PC. The game was built from the ground up for PS5, allowing Insomniac to take advantage of the console’s SSD, graphical capabilities and DualSense controller features.

Sony is also offering both a Standard Edition for $69.99 and a Digital Deluxe Edition for $79.99 in the US. The Deluxe Edition includes five exclusive suits, five exclusive claws, four Technique Points, early access to the Classic Brown Suit and Reflective Claws, plus four PlayStation avatars.

The game will support offline play and is designed as a single-player experience rather than an online multiplayer title.

A Darker Story About Logan

Insomniac is taking a considerably darker approach to Wolverine than the colourful superhero tone associated with some other Marvel games.

The story follows James “Logan” Howlett, who has stepped away from his life as Wolverine before being pulled back into a dangerous conflict involving mutantkind. Three years after leaving his team, Logan rejoins Team X during a critical moment for mutants.

The central threat comes from Bolivar Trask, who is pursuing an aggressive campaign against mutants. Logan must work with other mutants, including Jean Grey, to stop Trask’s plans.

The adventure takes players around the world, including the Canadian wilderness, Tokyo and Madripoor. Insomniac says these locations are designed to provide very different environments and set pieces rather than creating one giant open-world map.

The story also explores Logan’s forgotten past, identity and relationship with the mutant community. Major villains include Omega Red and Deathstrike, adding some of Wolverine’s most recognisable enemies to the campaign.

Wolverine’s Combat Is Built Around Aggression

Combat is arguably the game’s biggest selling point.

Insomniac describes Wolverine’s fighting style as fast, fluid and ferocious, with the design built around maintaining aggressive momentum. Players can combine Wolverine’s adamantium claws with kicks, barrages, critical attacks and special techniques.

The game also introduces a progression system based around Techniques and Adaptations.

Techniques provide additional combat moves, while Adaptations allow players to customise Wolverine’s abilities for different situations. Players can improve areas such as his ability to absorb bullets, extend parry windows and make better use of his Rage ability.

Wolverine’s Rage system is another important part of combat. It is divided into three tiers and can improve his survivability and offensive power. Players can choose when to use that stored aggression, creating a combat loop based around taking risks, building momentum and unleashing powerful attacks.

Four Special Techniques can be equipped simultaneously, giving players quick access to moves such as Tornado Spin, Knee Breaker and Spiral Strike.

Exploration, Suits and Wolverine’s Abilities

Although Marvel’s Wolverine is not open world, players will have opportunities to explore environments away from the main story.

Wolverine’s heightened senses can be used to discover optional challenges called Nightmare Doors, while collectible whisky bottles reveal pieces of Logan’s forgotten memories. Players can also discover material crates that are used to craft different suits.

The suit system is particularly extensive. Players can unlock designs inspired by versions of Wolverine from comics, films and animation, including Weapon X, Old Man Logan, Ultimate Wolverine and Patch. Players can also use more traditional civilian outfits such as Logan’s leather jacket and tank top.

The game also offers different claw designs, including bone, notched, curved, reflective and angled claws.

These additions give players the opportunity to customise Wolverine’s appearance while also connecting the game to different eras of the character’s history.

New Game Plus and Other Features

Insomniac has confirmed several additional features for players who finish the main campaign.

New Game Plus will allow players to replay the adventure with exclusive Techniques and higher level caps. There is also Mission Replay, allowing players to revisit individual sections of the story.

The game includes Nightmare Challenges, where players can compete for high scores, and a Photo Mode is also planned through a day-one update.

Insomniac is also placing significant emphasis on accessibility. The studio says the game includes more than 100 new, returning and improved accessibility features, covering visual, auditory, cognitive and motor accessibility. Options include high-contrast visuals, audio description, global game speed adjustments and stronger haptic signals.

Because of Wolverine’s violent fighting style, the game also includes controls that allow players to adjust certain elements of violence, blood, dismemberment and adult language.

PS5 and PS5 Pro Visuals

The game has been designed specifically around PS5 hardware, with Insomniac aiming for detailed environments, cinematic presentation and highly responsive combat.

The PS5 Pro version is enhanced, while the DualSense controller provides haptic feedback and adaptive triggers designed to make Wolverine’s claw attacks feel more physical. Sony also highlights the console’s SSD for fast loading between the game’s different global locations.

This hardware focus is one reason Sony has kept the game exclusive to PS5 rather than creating a last-generation PS4 version.

A Different Kind of Marvel Game

Marvel’s Wolverine is shaping up to be a very different experience from Insomniac’s Spider-Man games.

Rather than giving players a huge open city to explore, Insomniac is concentrating on a focused single-player campaign with violent close-range combat, character-driven storytelling and cinematic action sequences.

The combination of Wolverine’s healing factor, adamantium claws, Rage mechanics, customisation and brutal combat gives Insomniac an opportunity to build gameplay around a character whose fighting style is fundamentally different from Spider-Man’s.

With its September 15, 2026 release date, PS5-exclusive design and extensive combat and progression systems, Marvel’s Wolverine is one of the biggest superhero releases of 2026. The game’s emphasis on a darker story, global locations and aggressive combat could make it a significant new chapter in Insomniac’s growing Marvel universe.
