Blizzard has officially revealed the Amazon as the next playable class coming to Diablo IV, bringing one of the most recognizable character archetypes from Diablo II back to Sanctuary. The announcement was made during BlizzCon 2026, where Blizzard also unveiled the first major details about Diablo V, a 30th-anniversary season for Diablo IV, a Nintendo Switch 2 version and a new animated Diablo series in development with Netflix.
The Amazon is scheduled to arrive in the first half of 2027 through a new class pack. Unlike a simple return of the classic character, Blizzard is redesigning the Amazon specifically for Diablo IV, giving her new combat options, a new weapon type and several distinct gameplay archetypes.
Amazon Brings Back the Bow and Introduces the Javelin
The Amazon’s most important feature is her combination of ranged and close-to-mid-range combat. Blizzard confirmed that the class will once again use the iconic bow, while also introducing the javelin as an entirely new weapon type for Diablo IV.
This gives the Amazon a considerably broader combat identity than a traditional ranged character. Players can build around precision attacks from a distance, move aggressively through enemy groups with javelins or focus on supporting allies and controlling the battlefield.
The Amazon’s design is also rooted in her connection to Skovos, the island homeland that was introduced in Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred. Blizzard says the new version preserves the disciplined, athletic and highly trained warrior fantasy associated with the class while giving it a fresh identity within Diablo IV.
Four Amazon Archetypes Offer Different Playstyles
One of the biggest reveals at BlizzCon was that the Amazon will have four major gameplay archetypes: Champion, Skirmisher, Ranger and Commander.
The Champion is designed around close-range combat. This version of the Amazon uses a sword and shield and focuses on buffs that can strengthen herself as well as her allies.
The Skirmisher is built around mobility and aggressive hit-and-run attacks. It uses the javelin to move quickly around enemies and strike before repositioning.
The Ranger focuses on precision archery. Players who prefer staying at range can use this archetype to carefully target enemies and eliminate threats from a distance.
The Commander takes the Amazon’s battlefield-control abilities in another direction. This archetype can call upon Valkyries, allowing players to fight alongside summoned warriors and create a more tactical style of gameplay.
Together, these four approaches mean that two Amazon characters could potentially feel very different even when using the same basic class.
Valkyries Return With a Bigger Battlefield Role
Valkyries are among the most exciting elements of the Amazon’s return. In Diablo II, Valkyries were strongly associated with the class, and Blizzard is bringing that identity into Diablo IV through the Commander archetype.
Rather than simply functioning as a nostalgic reference, the Valkyries appear designed to become part of a broader battlefield strategy. The Commander can use formations of Valkyries to help control combat while the Amazon directs the fight.
This could make the Amazon particularly attractive to players who enjoy summon-based or tactical builds but still want a character capable of directly participating in combat.
Blizzard has not yet revealed the Amazon’s complete skill tree or final class-pack details. The studio says additional information, including purchase details, will be provided closer to the class’s release next year.
Diablo IV Is Still Expanding Despite Diablo V
The Amazon announcement is particularly significant because Blizzard simultaneously revealed Diablo V, which is currently planned for Spring 2029. Blizzard made clear that the announcement of the sequel does not mean Diablo IV is being abandoned.
Diablo IV will continue receiving new content, including Season of Hell’s Legacy, which launches September 15, 2026. The season is part of Diablo’s 30th-anniversary celebrations and brings back the Prime Evils Diablo, Mephisto and Baal, along with Deckard Cain and equipment inspired by earlier games.
Blizzard has also confirmed that Diablo IV is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on September 15 alongside the new season, expanding the game’s reach to another platform.
Diablo V Also Gets Its First Class Reveals
While the Amazon belongs to Diablo IV, BlizzCon also delivered the first major look at the classes being developed for Diablo V.
Blizzard confirmed three classes so far: the returning Demon Hunter, the Monk, and the completely new Plague Knight. The Demon Hunter uses twin crossbows and mobility-based attacks, while the Monk focuses on martial arts and holy powers. The Plague Knight is designed around spreading disease and consuming that corruption for power.
The sequel is set in a Sanctuary where Diablo has already won. Blizzard is also experimenting with Diablo II-inspired itemisation, including larger inventory items, gear sets, runes and Runewords. The game is planned for Spring 2029.
For Diablo IV players, however, the Amazon is the immediate attraction. Her combination of bow combat, javelins, mobility, sword-and-shield abilities and Valkyrie summons could make her one of the most versatile classes in the game’s roster.
With the Amazon arriving in the first half of 2027, Blizzard is effectively giving Diablo IV another major chapter while simultaneously preparing the franchise for its next generation with Diablo V. The full Amazon skill set, class-pack pricing and additional gameplay details are expected to be revealed closer to launch.
