Bitcoin has moved back toward the $85,000 level, while Ether has been trading around $2,714, as the cryptocurrency market enters October with renewed buying momentum. On October 2, Bitcoin briefly moved above $85,000 and approached $86,000, while Ethereum remained above $2,700. The broader crypto market capitalisation climbed to approximately $3.04 trillion during the rebound.

The latest move follows a volatile period in which Bitcoin had briefly crossed $85,000 before retreating as high US Treasury yields limited the strength of the rally. Bitcoin had traded around $83,700 on October 1 after touching approximately $85,500 following softer-than-expected US inflation data.

Bitcoin Reclaims the $85,000 Zone

Bitcoin’s move above $85,000 has become one of the main developments in the crypto market as traders assess whether the latest rebound can develop into a broader recovery.

The October 2 move was accompanied by significant liquidation activity in the derivatives market. The Economic Times reported that a sharp short squeeze helped push Bitcoin higher, with traders who had bet against the cryptocurrency being forced to close positions as prices rose.

A short squeeze can accelerate a price move because traders holding short positions may have to purchase Bitcoin to close those positions. Those additional purchases can create further upward pressure, particularly when the market is already experiencing strong buying.

Bitcoin’s move above $85,000 therefore reflects not only direct demand for the asset but also activity in the leveraged derivatives market.

Ether Holds Above $2,700

Ethereum has also participated in the recovery, with Ether trading around $2,714 during the recent market move. The token has remained above the psychologically important $2,700 level as traders look for signs of continued strength across major cryptocurrencies.

Ether has experienced a particularly strong third quarter. CoinDesk reported that Ethereum gained roughly 73% during the third quarter, compared with about 44% for Bitcoin over the same period. However, Bitcoin subsequently strengthened relative to Ether as the market entered October.

The different performance patterns show that capital has been rotating between the two largest cryptocurrencies rather than moving uniformly across the market.

ETF Inflows Remain an Important Market Factor

Institutional demand has become an increasingly important part of the Bitcoin market through exchange-traded funds.

The Economic Times reported on October 1 that Bitcoin was trading near $84,000 and that strong inflows into Bitcoin ETFs were helping support the recovery. At the same time, spot-market demand appeared more moderate, creating a contrast between institutional flows and direct market buying.

ETF activity matters because it gives traditional investors exposure to Bitcoin through regulated financial products without requiring them to directly hold the cryptocurrency.

Continued inflows can therefore provide an additional source of demand during periods when retail or spot-market buying is less aggressive.

US Treasury Yields Remain a Major Risk Factor

Despite the cryptocurrency rebound, macroeconomic conditions remain important.

US Treasury yields have remained elevated, creating pressure on risk-sensitive assets. CoinDesk reported that the 10-year Treasury yield was near 5.3%, while the 30-year yield remained close to levels not seen since 2002.

Higher bond yields can make fixed-income investments relatively more attractive and can reduce the amount of capital flowing toward riskier assets such as cryptocurrencies.

This was visible during Bitcoin’s move above $85,000 earlier in the week. The initial boost following softer inflation data weakened as Treasury yields remained high.

The interaction between crypto prices, inflation expectations, interest rates and Treasury yields is therefore likely to remain an important factor for the market.

Citi Raises Its Bitcoin and Ether Forecasts

The recent crypto recovery has also prompted changes in some institutional forecasts.

Reuters reported on October 1 that Citigroup raised its 12-month Bitcoin forecast to $113,000 from $82,000. The bank also increased its 12-month Ether forecast to $3,028 from $2,240, citing stronger cryptocurrency activity, favourable macroeconomic conditions and renewed ETF inflows.

These are forecasts from Citigroup rather than guarantees about future prices. Cryptocurrency markets can move substantially in either direction, and price targets from financial institutions are subject to changing economic, regulatory and market conditions.

The revised estimates nevertheless demonstrate how the recent recovery has changed the outlook among some institutional market participants.

October Begins With Renewed Crypto Momentum

The beginning of October has attracted considerable attention because Bitcoin historically receives significant seasonal interest during the month, although past seasonal patterns do not guarantee future performance.

Bitcoin entered October after gaining during September and then briefly breaking above $85,000. PrimeXBT reported that Bitcoin was hovering around $85,000 on October 1 after finding support near $83,500.

The immediate battle for the market is therefore occurring around the $85,000 area. Sustained trading above that level would represent a continuation of the recent rebound, while a retreat could bring attention back to lower support zones.

The Wider Crypto Market Is Moving Higher

Bitcoin and Ether are not the only cryptocurrencies participating in the latest recovery.

The Economic Times’ October 2 market data showed Bitcoin and Ethereum both trading higher in India, while several major digital assets were also posting gains. Solana, BNB and XRP were among the major cryptocurrencies showing positive moves during the session.

However, performance remains uneven across the market. Some tokens were declining sharply even as Bitcoin and Ethereum advanced, demonstrating that the recovery is not affecting every cryptocurrency equally.

This divergence is common during volatile cryptocurrency markets, where liquidity, token-specific developments and speculative positioning can produce large differences in daily performance.

Jobs Data Could Become the Next Major Catalyst

US economic data could become an important factor for cryptocurrency markets as investors assess the direction of interest rates.

The latest Bitcoin rebound comes ahead of important US labour-market data, which could influence expectations around monetary policy and Treasury yields. The Economic Times noted that upcoming US jobs data could affect investor behaviour and broader market sentiment.

If economic data changes expectations around interest rates, cryptocurrencies could react quickly because Bitcoin and other digital assets remain highly sensitive to changes in global liquidity and risk appetite.

Bitcoin and Ether Enter a Crucial Market Phase

Bitcoin trading around $85,000 and Ether near $2,714 mark an important moment for the cryptocurrency market after a period of sharp volatility. Bitcoin’s latest move has been supported by a combination of short-position liquidations, ETF demand and improving sentiment, while Ethereum has maintained its position above $2,700.

At the same time, elevated Treasury yields, changing interest-rate expectations and upcoming US economic data remain potential sources of volatility.

The latest prices should therefore be viewed as a snapshot of a rapidly changing market rather than a guaranteed indication of what comes next. For now, Bitcoin’s return toward $85,000 and Ether’s hold above $2,700 have put the two largest cryptocurrencies back in focus as investors begin October watching whether the recovery can maintain its momentum.
