Roblox Plans to Turn User Games Into Standalone Apps

Roblox is preparing one of the biggest changes to its platform yet: allowing creators to turn individual Roblox games into standalone apps for mobile, PC and consoles. The announcement, made at Roblox Developers Conference (RDC) 2026, could fundamentally change how players discover and access user-created games.

Roblox

Until now, Roblox has operated largely as a central platform where players open the Roblox application, browse its huge library of experiences and then launch individual games from within the app. Under the new Roblox Everywhere initiative, creators will eventually be able to distribute their experiences as individual applications while still using Roblox’s underlying technology and services.

The move comes as Roblox celebrates its 20th anniversary and attempts to make its ecosystem more accessible to both players and developers. The company says players spent 29 billion hours on Roblox during the latest quarter across more than 180 countries, showing the enormous scale of its user-generated gaming ecosystem.

Roblox Games Could Become Individual Apps

The biggest change is that a popular Roblox experience could eventually exist outside the main Roblox application.

For example, instead of opening Roblox and searching for a particular game, a player could potentially download that game’s own application directly. Roblox would continue providing important technology and services behind the experience, including multiplayer infrastructure, identity, accounts, social connections, communication, safety and its economy.

This could give successful Roblox developers a completely different way to build their brands.

Many Roblox games already have communities that extend beyond the platform through YouTube, TikTok, Discord and other social networks. A standalone application could make the transition from watching a game online to actually playing it much easier.

The initiative could also help Roblox compete more directly with traditional game engines and distribution platforms. Instead of being viewed only as a place where people play user-generated games, Roblox could increasingly function as the technology powering games that are distributed in different ways.

However, Roblox has not yet provided a complete release schedule for standalone publishing, and details about specific storefronts, eligibility requirements and the first group of creators to receive access are still being worked out.

Browser Gaming Will Remove Another Barrier

Roblox is also making it easier to play games without installing the main application.

By the end of 2026, players will be able to open a Roblox game’s Experience Details page in Google Chrome and start playing directly through the browser, without first downloading the Roblox app. Support for additional browsers is expected later.

This could be particularly important for people discovering Roblox games through social media.

Imagine seeing a Roblox game on YouTube or another platform, clicking a link and immediately entering the game through a browser. The player would no longer have to install Roblox, open it, create or sign into an account and then search for the experience.

That reduction in friction could increase the number of people who try Roblox games for the first time.

Offline Roblox Games Are Also Coming

Roblox is also moving beyond its traditional always-online model.

Creators will be able to combine online and offline modes within the same game, potentially allowing developers to build single-player campaigns that can be played without an internet connection. Broad availability of offline solo play is planned for around mid-2027, with early access expected sooner.

This could open the door to a much wider variety of Roblox experiences.

Developers could, for example, create a story-driven adventure with an offline campaign while keeping multiplayer features available when players reconnect. It could also make Roblox more attractive in markets where users have unreliable or expensive internet connections.

The change represents a significant departure from the idea that Roblox games must always operate inside a connected social platform.

AI Is Making Game Creation Easier

The standalone-app announcement comes alongside a major expansion of Roblox’s artificial-intelligence development tools.

Roblox’s Build tool allows users to create games using natural-language prompts. Rather than manually constructing every part of an experience, creators can describe what they want and use AI-assisted tools to generate playable content.

Roblox said approximately 9,000 games have already been published using Build, and 71% of creators who used the tool had never previously used Roblox Studio.

The company is also developing Scene Generator, which will allow creators to use text prompts and reference images to generate functional game layouts. AI-powered NPCs are also being developed to help test games and identify problems before experiences are released to players.

Roblox is additionally expanding support for 2D game development, meaning the platform is becoming less dependent on its traditional 3D experience format.

Together, these tools could significantly lower the technical barrier to game development. Someone without years of programming or Roblox Studio experience could potentially create a playable game, test it with AI and eventually distribute it beyond the Roblox ecosystem.

A Major Opportunity for Roblox Creators

The biggest potential benefit of Roblox Everywhere is distribution.

A creator can spend months building an experience, but attracting players is often just as difficult as making the game itself. A standalone application could give developers a dedicated store listing, branding and a direct route to players.

Roblox says creators have earned more than $5 billion through its developer exchange system since 2013, including approximately $1.7 billion over the past 12 months.

The company is also introducing Roblox Wallet, designed to give eligible creators faster access to cleared earnings. A Roblox Card is planned for 2027, further expanding the company’s financial tools for creators.

For successful developers, this could make Roblox look increasingly like a complete business ecosystem: create a game, use AI to accelerate development, publish it, build an audience and receive earnings.

Roblox Is Trying to Become More Than an App

The long-term significance of Roblox Everywhere is bigger than simply putting Roblox games into app stores.

Roblox appears to be shifting from being primarily a destination where users find games toward becoming a platform and technology layer that powers games across multiple destinations.

Players could eventually encounter a Roblox game through a standalone app, a browser, the traditional Roblox application or potentially other distribution channels, while the underlying technology remains connected to Roblox.

There are still important questions around moderation, child safety, parental controls, account management, monetisation, updates and platform-store policies. Standalone distribution could also make discovery more competitive because individual developers would have to compete outside Roblox’s existing recommendation system.

Nevertheless, the direction is clear. With standalone apps, browser play, offline modes and increasingly powerful AI development tools, Roblox is trying to make its games easier to create, easier to discover and easier to play almost anywhere.

If the plan succeeds, the future of Roblox may no longer be about opening one application and choosing from millions of experiences. Instead, individual Roblox games could begin to look and feel like independent games of their own—while still being powered by the enormous technology and community infrastructure behind Roblox.
