Sony’s September 3 PlayStation State of Play turned into one of the year’s biggest showcases for PS5, bringing a long list of new announcements, gameplay reveals, release dates and updates. The event was followed immediately by a separate State of Play Japan presentation, giving fans an unusually broad look at games coming from PlayStation Studios, major third-party publishers and developers across Japan and Asia. In total, Sony’s two showcases featured more than 30 games.

Among the biggest announcements were a new launch trailer for Marvel’s Wolverine, the reveal of Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, the announcement of Maneater 2, a new look at Metro 2039, the release date for Final Fantasy VII Revelation, and the first details about a new LEGO PlayStation console set. Sony also used the showcase to expand its PlayStation Plus lineup and reveal several games scheduled for 2027 and beyond.

Marvel’s Wolverine leads the showcase

The biggest immediate release from the presentation was Marvel’s Wolverine, which received a new launch trailer ahead of its September 15 release on PS5.

The trailer provided another look at Logan’s brutal combat and introduced more of the characters and threats surrounding him. Wolverine will encounter familiar Marvel figures including Jean Grey, Mystique and Sabretooth, while also facing the Sentinel threat. Sony has positioned the game as a major PlayStation 5 release, and the September launch puts it directly into a busy period for blockbuster games.

For PlayStation, Wolverine is particularly important because it comes from Insomniac Games, the studio behind the highly successful Marvel’s Spider-Man series. The new footage suggests that the developer is taking the fast movement and cinematic presentation associated with its previous Marvel games while giving Wolverine a considerably more aggressive combat system.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation gets a release date

Square Enix provided one of the most important long-term announcements of the show with Final Fantasy VII Revelation.

The third and final entry in the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy is scheduled to launch on April 8, 2027. The extended presentation showed more of the game’s world, story and combat, including the ability to freely fly around the map and travel to different locations with the player’s chosen party members.

The confirmation of an April release gives one of PlayStation’s biggest upcoming RPGs a firm position on the 2027 calendar. It also means players now have a clearer picture of the next major chapter in Square Enix’s ambitious remake project.

Monster Hunter Wilds gets a major expansion

Capcom revealed Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, a large expansion coming to PS5 in 2027.

The expansion will introduce new monsters, new challenges, a new area and additional hunting mechanics. Sony’s presentation also showed a new threat involving Elder Dragons, while Capcom revealed the Skybound Eyrie area and the new monster Gundoraja.

The expansion is designed to significantly extend Monster Hunter Wilds rather than simply add a small collection of new missions. Players will receive new hunting actions and mechanics alongside another chapter in the Expedition Team’s story. A playable demo is also planned for Tokyo Game Show 2026.

Maneater 2 and Metro 2039 expand the 2027 lineup

Maneater 2 was officially announced during the showcase. The sequel once again puts players in control of a deadly bull shark, this time inside an extravagant private-island theme park. The objective is essentially to eat, explore and evolve while escaping the attraction designed to contain you.

The game is coming to PS5 in 2027, although Sony has not yet announced a specific release date.

Another major announcement was Metro 2039, the latest survival shooter from 4A Games. The game received its first PS5 Pro gameplay footage and is scheduled for release on February 4, 2027.

Metro 2039 follows a mysterious protagonist known as the Stranger through a dangerous post-apocalyptic Moscow. The gameplay combines exploration, survival, stealth and combat, continuing the atmospheric approach that has defined the Metro franchise.

LEGO brings the original PlayStation back in brick form

Sony also moved beyond games with the announcement of a new LEGO PlayStation set.

The 1,911-piece set recreates the original PlayStation console and controller at almost 1:1 scale. Once assembled, the console measures around 26 centimetres wide and includes details designed to reference PlayStation’s history.

The set launches on October 1, 2026, making it one of the more unusual products revealed during the showcase. Rather than targeting only active gamers, Sony and LEGO are clearly aiming at collectors and fans who grew up with the original PlayStation.

More games fill out the PS5 calendar

The two showcases also introduced several other projects. Where the Seeds Fall, from Cygames’ new CygamesEdge label, will launch on November 5, 2026. Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World arrives on December 3, while Fate/Extra Record is scheduled for January 28, 2027.

Sony also revealed Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 for 2027, Daba: Land of Water Scar for spring 2027 and World Phasebound Control Authority: WPCA for 2028.

The presentation also featured updates for games such as Crimson Desert, Saros, Rematch, Rev. Noir and SlashZero, showing that Sony’s strategy was not limited to a handful of blockbuster exclusives.

PlayStation Plus gets new additions

Sony also used the event to promote PlayStation Plus. Mycopunk, a cooperative looter shooter for up to four players, is coming to the Game Catalog later this year.

The Premium Classics lineup will also receive Mega Man X: Command Mission in September, followed by Dino Crisis 2 and the original Ratchet & Clank. These additions give subscribers a mixture of new experiences and older PlayStation titles.

It is worth noting that these announcements are separate from September’s previously announced monthly PlayStation Plus games, which include Sniper Elite: Resistance, MLB The Show 26, Wobbly Life and Chained Echoes.

GTA 6 hardware adds another major talking point

The wider PlayStation news around the showcase also included new GTA 6-themed DualSense controllers, with black and white designs featuring the game’s branding. The controllers are scheduled for November 19, adding another major piece of GTA 6 merchandise to Sony’s hardware lineup.

With GTA 6 itself continuing to generate enormous interest, the accessories are likely to attract collectors as well as players preparing for Rockstar’s next blockbuster.

Sony’s 2026 strategy is becoming clearer

The September State of Play shows that Sony is building a broad release pipeline rather than relying on one or two major games. Marvel’s Wolverine provides an immediate blockbuster for September, while Final Fantasy VII Revelation, Metro 2039, Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance and several Japanese-developed titles give the PS5 a strong 2027 lineup.

The decision to run a second Japan-focused presentation on the same day was also significant. Sony used the event to highlight games from Japanese and Asian developers that might otherwise receive less attention in a global showcase.

Overall, the September 3 presentation was less about a single surprise announcement and more about demonstrating the depth of the PS5’s upcoming software pipeline. With major releases arriving throughout late 2026 and an increasingly packed 2027 calendar, Sony appears to be entering the next stage of the PS5 generation with a considerably wider selection of games and experiences.
