Rockstar Games has finally released Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, giving fans their most detailed official preview yet of the highly anticipated open-world game. The 27-minute presentation was captured entirely from in-game PlayStation 5 footage and provides a closer look at Jason Duval, Lucia Caminos, Vice City, the wider state of Leonida and several gameplay systems.

The biggest confirmation remains the release date: GTA 6 will launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has not announced a PC launch date.

Jason and Lucia remain at the centre of the story

GTA 6 follows Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, a criminal couple whose relationship becomes central to the game’s story.

Rockstar’s official material describes Jason as someone who grew up around criminals and later worked for drug runners in the Keys. Lucia, meanwhile, has already established herself as one of the most important characters in the game. The pair are forced to depend on each other after a criminal job goes wrong, pulling them into a much larger conspiracy across Leonida.

The new footage emphasizes their relationship as they move between ordinary activities and increasingly dangerous criminal operations.

A much more interactive Vice City

The extended look shows a version of Vice City that is considerably more detailed and reactive than previous GTA games.

The city is only one part of the wider state of Leonida, with Rockstar showing beaches, rural areas, waterways, smaller communities and the Florida Keys-inspired region.

The world is designed to feel constantly active, with pedestrians, vehicles, businesses and other activities continuing around the player rather than simply waiting for missions to begin.

Switching between Jason and Lucia

One of the most important gameplay systems is the ability to switch between Jason and Lucia.

The two characters can operate together or separately, and the transition between them is designed to be fast. When they are working together, players can switch perspectives during certain situations, while separated characters can be followed as events unfold elsewhere in the world.

This builds on the character-switching concept introduced in GTA V while making the relationship between the two protagonists much more important to gameplay.

More realistic police and wanted mechanics

Police encounters are also receiving a major overhaul.

The new footage shows more tactical pursuits and shootouts, while additional previews have highlighted situations in which law enforcement can react to what characters are wearing and carrying. Players can also use different approaches when attempting to escape police attention.

The goal appears to be making police encounters less predictable than simply gaining stars and driving away.

New robbery mechanics

Robberies remain a major part of GTA 6, but Rockstar appears to be giving players more ways to approach them.

The game includes different methods for breaking into vehicles and businesses, with previews showing mechanics such as manipulating car locks and breaking windows. Players can also carry out robberies involving locations such as jewellery stores.

This suggests that GTA 6’s criminal activities will involve more interaction than the traditional “start mission, follow objective and escape” structure.

Character physicality and customization

Another notable feature is the ability for characters’ physical appearance to change depending on their activities.

Reports from the extended preview indicate that exercise and other activities can influence characters’ physiques, adding another layer of customization to Jason and Lucia.

This builds on Rockstar’s previous experiments with character attributes while giving the protagonists a more dynamic physical presence.

A huge range of activities

Rockstar is also filling Leonida with activities outside the main story.

The extended footage and previews show activities including basketball, scuba diving, kayaking, boating, swimming and interactions with animals.

Vehicles and car culture are also receiving significant attention, with street racing, track events and extensive vehicle customization expected to play an important role in the game.

A more reactive open world

One of the biggest technological improvements is the behaviour of NPCs.

The game features more advanced pedestrian behaviour, with characters reacting to situations around them rather than simply following predetermined routines. The environment is also designed to respond more dynamically to player actions.

Rockstar is also incorporating satire around social media and modern internet culture, continuing the series’ tradition of making fun of contemporary society.

The game is built for current-generation consoles

The entire Extended Look was captured using PlayStation 5 in-game footage, according to Rockstar. The studio describes GTA 6 as the biggest and most immersive evolution of the series yet.

GTA 6 is officially confirmed for:

  • PlayStation 5
  • Xbox Series X|S

Rockstar has not yet announced a PC release date.

Release date and pricing

Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19, 2026. Rockstar began pre-orders in June, with the standard edition priced from $79.99 in the United States. An Ultimate Edition is also available with additional content.

Rockstar has also confirmed a Vintage Vice City Pack for purchases made before November 20, 2026.

GTA 6 could be Rockstar’s biggest open-world yet

The Extended Look makes it clear that Rockstar is focusing heavily on immersion rather than simply creating a larger map.

From the relationship between Jason and Lucia to the more reactive police system, advanced NPC behaviour, expanded robbery mechanics, vehicle culture, physical character changes and a huge range of activities, GTA 6 appears designed to make Leonida feel like a continuously functioning world.

The game is now less than three months from release. GTA 6 officially arrives on November 19, 2026, and the Extended Look has given fans the clearest indication yet of how Rockstar plans to redefine its open-world formula.
